Breukelen municipality

Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 14.416; area: 48,64 km². Settlements: Breukelen (seat), Gieltjesdorp, Kockengen, Kortrijk, Laagnieuwkoop, Nieuwer Ter Aa, Oud Aa, Oukoop, Portengen, Portengense Brug, Scheendijk, Spengen.
Breukelen has since 1927 ties with the settlement of Breukelen in New York city (USA) also known as Brooklyn; that settlement was founded in 1627 by Dutch colonists. Another feature of Breukelen is the Nijenrode school for diplomats.

Sierksma's Nederlands Vlaggenboek (1962) [sie62] mentions a flag horizontal yellow over red, unofficial, but used on festive occasions; the colors are derived from the first quarter of the municipal arms. It is the flag of the castle and of the family of Nijenrode.
The present flag was adopted 5 Mar 1963.

Breukelen CoA

The municipal arms is the CoA of the van Nijenrode family. It originated when Gijsbrecht II van Nijenrode merged the CoA of his mother, Maria van Persijn van Velsen with that of Nijenrode. (Persijn provided the crosses). The van Nijenrode family owned most of Breukelen and Kockengen. On 21 Jul 1949 the arms were granted by Royal Resolution to the municipality of Breukelen, and it remained unchanged after the merger of Breukelen and Kockengen on 1 Jan 1989.
