Sint Maarten former municipality

Sint Maarten is a former municipality in Noord-Holland province, a bit north of Alkmaar. Since 1990 split between Schagen and Harenkarspel.
Flag: per fly-diagonal yellow - blue; in the center of the yellow field the image of St. Martin on a horse, cutting his coat and presenting it to a beggar, all in blue lines.
adopted 2 Mar 1978, design: Stichting Banistiek en Heraldiek
The symbolism is self-evident. The colors and images are derived from the municipal arms.

Sint Maarten had 2119 inhabitants in the settlements Sint Maarten (seat), Eenigenbrug, Groenveld, Stroet, Rijp, Valkkoog.
Here remains were found of the "dwangburcht" (coercive castle?) Nuwendoorn of Count Floris V of Holland (13th century). In 1478 Sint Maarten, Eenigenbrug and Valkkoog formed one legal area, and remained virtually unchanged till now.
The arms show St. Martin presenting a kind of ring or wreath to the beggar.
The saint is still popular and 11 November is celebrated with gusto every year.
