Surfing around through FOTW, I ended up in the page on Bussum (Netherlands) and got puzzled by those yellow things from the COA. What are those?
Also, are those narrow yellow rectangles at the hoist part of the flag?
Jorge Candeias, 4 June 2001

The yellow things on the flag of Bussum are "boekweitkorrels",  buckwheat grains By the way the leaves of this same plant are on the flag of yet another North Holland municipality - have a look at Hilversum.
Franc van Diest, 4 June 2001

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is not at all related to the various species of grain, but is a member of Polygonaceae, like e.g. rhubarbs.
Ole Andersen, 4 June 2001

Hilversum: these are seeds of buckwheat too, not leaves. But, according to Ralf Hartemink's site, in the 19th century the shield in the CoA was sometimes surrounded by a wreath of buckwheat leaves.
