Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 23.061; area: 53,00 km². Settlements: Kaatsheuvel (seat), De Moer, Loon op Zand.
Flag: 14 stripes of white - black - white - black - white - black - white - yellow - red - yellow - red - yellow - red - yellow -
proportioned 2:1:1:1:1:1:2:2:1:1:1:1:1:2.
Adopted 6 Jun 1968 by municipal resolution.
The flag is a striped "translation" of the municipal arms.

Apart from the shoe-industry Loon op Zand has a great attraction in "Sprookjespark De Efteling" in Kaatsheuvel, a fairytale resort, most of which was designed by Anton Pieck c. 1950.

Nicknames:
"Theebuiken" - teabellies, who like tea too much
"Zwävelsoppers" - sulphurdippers: there were many travelling salesmen dealing with sulphur-sticks (predecessors of matches), which had to be dipped in sulphur.
"Pekkellikkers" - pekkel is a synonym of "jenever" - gin: they liked a glas of gin (or two).

Kaatsheuvel:
"Zwevelmarsen" - the "Kètsers" sold the sulphursticks, which were dipped in Loon.
"Boenderbinders" - scrubber-binders, made from the heather in the neighbourhood.

According to "Wie, Wat, Waar? 1940", an annual published by the Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad in Nov. 1939, the flag of Loon op Zand was: square chequy of red and white; in the canton the municipal arms.
This is a parading flag, used in 1935 at the 750th birthday of 's-Hertogenbosch.

Arms: or three horns gules garnished argent (Horne) and a chief argent three shoemakers' hammers noir in bend.
The shoemakers' hammers refer to the most popular pastime in the municipality, while the horns refer to the Horne family.
