The name "Arne" is from a former river, Arne, after which Arnemuiden
(=Arne-mouth) was named, and which flowed through Middelburg. Middelburg
used to be a member of the Hansa, and flourished
as a port, with trade into the Levant, until the French occupation ended
all sailing activity. Its position as capital of Zeeland and the recent
arrival of thousands of (German) tourists, along with its still preserved
old town characteristics make it an attractive holiday resort, with even
a yachtclub in the middle of nowhere.
