Shipmate Flagchart : http://www.shipmate.nl/flags.htm
adopted 25 Jun 1991.
Granted 17 Jul 1991.
Nieuweschans old municipal flag, adopted 19 Dec 1972 by municipal resolution;
design: Stichting Heraldiek en Banistiek.
Description: horizontal stripes red - white - blue - yellow - blue
- white - red (1:1:4:1:4:1:1) with at 1/3 flaglength in saltire a yellow
halbard and a yellow pike of 7/13 flagheight; the parts on the yellow stripe
colored red.
The colors are derived from the municipal arms and the whole image
illustrates symbolically the character of the municipality - in red-white-blue
one sees "The Netherlands"; the yellow stripe represents the east-west,
and west-east traffic across the German border, formerly defended by heavy
armaments, at present by crossed barriers with a red warning sign.
Source: Vexilla Nostra, 8 (1973): 52.
Nieuweschans was bought in 1628 from the Count of Oost-Friesland (now
in Germany); a fortress was built here, and to symbolize that a cannon
has been placed on the arms of Nieuweschans, and a spear and habard in
saltire on the flag.
On 1 Jan 1992 Nieuweschans became part of Reiderland.
