Shipmate Flagchart : http://www.shipmate.nl/flags.htm
See also:The municipal administration of Haren informs me that the flag is of
their own design and was established in the meeting of Burgemeester and
Wethouders on 6 november 1972. The original drawing and construction sheet
shows a flag proportioned 9:14, white with blue stripes along the flywise
edges proportioned 1:4:1, and placed in the center of the flag the municipal
arms. Those arms, as granted 12 januari 1914 are: Azure, a silver bell,
a "free quarter" a double eagle sable with on its breast a heart-shield
silver a fess vert. The shield crowned with a five-leaved crown.
The bell reminds of the eight medieval "marken" the municipal territory
consisted of in 1914 (Haren, Noordlaren, Onnen, Glimmen, Hemmen, Dilgt,
Essen en Helpman). At one time law stipulated that citizens of a mark were
to be called to meetings by "klock-treckinge" (chiming). To avoid
confusion with other, similar Arms (see Franeker),
the Arms of Groningen were added too refer
to the time that city owned the Gorecht.

This flag was not official, but was frequently used. The colors have
been derived from the municipal coat of arms in reverse order. Source:
