adopted 22 Mar 1965; design: Stichting Heraldiek en Banistiek
The municipal council decided to replace the old unofficial flag with
a design of the Stichting Heraldiek en Banistiek. On 22 Mar 1965 the new,
official flag was adopted:
Hoist-diagonally divided of yellow and blue with in the center an opened
castletower in the Gelre style, countercharged.
Gendt received city-rights in 1312 from Count Reinold of Gelre. That
is reflected in the castle, which is opened because Gendt was never a closed
fort. Furthermore it symbolizes castle-towers of the still existing Huis
Poelwijck, and the tower of the long disappeared Huis te Gendt. The first
(on the flag on top) is well conserved, the second is only visible in its
foundations.
Gendt is also known for "vendelzwaaien" - flagthrowing.
