Kesteren [former] municipality
On 1 Jan 2002 Kesteren merged with the municipalities of Dodewaard
and Echteld, to form the new municipality of
Kesteren. That was renamed on 1 Apr 2003 to the municipality of Neder-Betuwe.
Kesteren is a Over Betuwe municipality in West Gelderland, a fruit
growing area. The name is derived from Latin 'castra', army camps - there
used to be two castles. According to van der Aa, 'Aardrijkskundig Woordenboek
der Nederlanden', there was here an oak or lime tree, where in the days
of the Batavi justice was administered.
The flag was adopted 12 June 1959, derived from the municipal CoA.
<IMO a quite unimaginative flag, compared with the CoA, which has a
kind of samovar (dubbelnap), a swan, a wolfshead and a lion on it>
