Overasselt was a separate municipality until it merged with Heumen in 1980 to form the new municipality of Heumen. It is on the Maas river, west of Heumen, with (1968) 3.000 inhabitants in the settlements Overasselt (seat), Worsem, Nederasselt, Keent, Balgooi, Valenberg, Heide. It is in the "Rijk van Nijmegen", the region in Gelderland between the Maas and Waal rivers, west and south of the city of Nijmegen. On New Year's Eve 1925 that whole area was flooded, with in Overasselt a breach in the dike of 125 meters.
