The black cross reminds of the old monastery, after which the village

(feen clooster) of the Norbertine nuns of Oudwoude, founded before
1287 from Dokkum, relinquished 1579.
Nickname: Hegereiners - people who circulated in the highest circles.

Veenklooster CoA
from Ralf Hartemink's website.
CoA registered in the Genealogysk Jierboek 1976.
The swan is from the arms of the Fogelsangh family, who lived here
and after which "Fogelsanghstate" was named, a manor which is still dominating
the village.
