Penjum village

Penjum (say: Pijum, Dutch: Pingjum) is a village in Wûnseradiel municipality in the province of Fryslân.
Flag: blue bordered yellow; at the hoist the narrowed municipal flag.
adopted 1955; design: Kl. Sierksma.
Arms: azure bordered or a fleur-de-lis of the same.
The fleur-de-lis is derived from from the Hiddema family, who had a stins (fortified house) in Penjum.
Penjum is a village with c. 600 inhabitants with 3 churches. It is an old settlement, on land enclosed by a dike in ancient times; on the "terp" old Germanic, Roman and Carolingian remains have been found.

Nickname: "Beanhulen" - pea-wrap, Penjumers were so poor that they had to eat that.
"Moudekrûpers" - dustcrawlers
"Ulefellen" - sweets - refers to lack of energy of the Penjumers ("suertsjes"). The Society for Village Interests has done extensive research, but was not able to find the exact meaning of this nickname; the Penjumer Kindergarten therefore was baptized "De Ulefeltsjes".
"Âlde jongens" - bachelors - The Penjumers were too afraid to ask girls, the "suertsjes".
