Makkum village
Makkum is a village in Wûnseradiel municipality in the province of
Fryslân.
Flag: per hoistdiagonal yellow over green; at the hoist the narrowed
municipal flag.
adopted 1955; design: Kl. Sierksma.
Arms: Azure a mermaid or, holding in her right hand a sailing boat
argent, and in her left hand a lime-kiln argent.
The symbolism of this old CoA is that all prosperity for Makkum originates
in the sea: fishing and chalk. The chalk-industry has disappeared, and
fishing is disappearing gradually. According to Mr. Sierksma Makkum used
to have another CoA: a deer statant. That is no longer in use.
This is no longer true: Makkumer pottery is prospering more than ever,
and there are several wharfs for yachting boats - one is even producing
ships for filthy rich people. The maid could afford a furcoat :-)
Nickname: "Strânjutters" - beachcombers
"Migen" - relatives (Dutch: "magen") - honorific name
for people who value their relatives.
