Population (1 Jan 2004): 17.038; area: 109,91 km²; settlements: Urk (seat).
Urk used to be an island in the Zuiderzee, administratively resorting under Amsterdam. Now part of Flevoland and still famous for its fishery and of course the 'Rock of Urk'. It lies in the southwest Noordoostpolder.
Flag: vijf stripes proportioned 1:1:8:1:1 - red - white - blue - white - red; at 1/3 flaglength a white haddock.
Adopted 9 Apr 1965; design: Stichting Banistiek en Heraldiek.
The white fish on blue is from the arms of Urk. The flag is connected to a very old Dutch shipping tradition: local flags added the Dutch flag-colors to top and bottom.
