Dronten municipality

Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 36.367; area: 424,00 km². Settlements: Biddinghuizen, Dronten, Swifterbant, Ketelhaven and Roggebotsluis.
Dronten was one of the first towns of the Flevopolders in the former Zuiderzee. It is close to the town of Kampen in Overijssel.
Jarig Bakker, 13 August 1999.

The flag of the municipality of Dronten has no connection to the municipal arms. On 3 Sep 1973 the Mayor and Aldermen decided to use a green piece of cloth with the municipal logo, making it evident that this was not the official municipal flag. The young municipality of Dronten wanted a recognizable flag; municipal arms had not been granted yet. When many years later people started to rethink about the flag it appeared that the logo-flag had become so customary that the municipal council decided to propose to recognize it as the official flag. That was decided on 27 May 1982.
Official description: green with halfway between hoist and fly and with height equal to 16/21 of flagheight a white emblem, according to the municipal vignette, that is seven stylized mooring-masts in circular form.

Dronten CoA

[Dronten CoA] image from "Gemeentewapens in Nederland", 1989.

Coat of arms - design mr. G. A. Bontekoe. Request Mayor and Aldermen 11 Oct 1972. Granted by Royal Resolution 15 Jan 1975.
Description: wavy per fess; I. azure a fleur-de-lis argent; II. or three plaited rings gules, the central one bigger and lower placed than the others, surmonté a mooring-mast noir with a head argent emerging from the base. The shield surmonté a crown or of three leaves and supported by two horses with lifted tail. All placed on a white base.

Explanation: the design implies a horizontally divided shield, wherein the cutting line is wavy to indicate that the municipality was wrestled out of the water. The top half of the shield is executed in blue and includes the arms of Minister Lely, the visionary man of the Zuiderzeewerken. The arms of the municipalities of Wieringermeer and the Noordoostpolder do contain the arms of Minister Lely as well. The lower half of the shield, executed in gold, has as central element a mooring-mast, in connection to the cultural center "De Meerpaal" in Dronten, and the connevtion between it and the municipality. Around the mooring-mast is a big red ring, to which two smaller ones have been connected, symbolizing the places Dronten, Biddinghuizen, and Swifterbant. To underline the large area of the municipality supporters have been added. Because the interest in horses in the municipality is
great it was found fitting to use two of them as supporters.

Note: There was a bit of fuss about the supporters. The High Council of Nobility objected, because supporters could only be granted if there was a historical motivation. The municipality insisted, however, and appealed to the "Raad van State" (State Council). This council agreed with the municipality and the supporters were granted after all.

After taking so much trouble in getting the arms, they are hardly used. The municipality had in 1974 its own house-style designed (a logo with seven mooring-masts), which is used for all municipal occasions.
