Shipmate Flagchart : http://www.shipmate.nl/flags.htm
See also:Assen is the capital of Drenthe, with c. 60.000 inhabitants on c. 54
sq.km. Settlements: Assen city (seat), Witten en Loon, Rhee, Ter Aard,
Ubbena, een gedeelte van Vries, Zeijen, Zeijerveen en Zeijerveld.
According to Kl. Sierksma (Nederlands Vlaggenboek, 1962): 'this flag
was adopted on 21 May 1959 by municipal council decision, after this flag
had been in use unofficially. The other flag in use was a flag of three
equally wide bars in BWY, in which the colors of the municipal Coat of
Arms were used. This flag has been maintained in the Marktstraat (Market-street),
while the Asser Drumband has a uniform, consisting of the colors blue,
white and yellow.'
Jarig Bakker, 24 July 1999.
On 19 Sep 1821 the High Council of Nobility granted the CoA to the city
of Assen. The arms are derived from the lordshipseal ("landschapszegel")
of Drenthe. This seal originated in the monastery of Maria in Campis. The
Asser CoA is nearly isentical to the Drentse CoA, where the Child Jezus
sits on the left knee. Official description: "A shield of azure, charged
with a crowned image of the Virgin Mary, dressed in white, sitting between
to columns or, with a naked child, whose head is surrounded with rays,
on the dexter knee. The shield surmonté with a crown or and supported
on both sides by a rampant lion.
