Description

I believe San Gwann means St John in Maltese, thus the flag is canting as it shows the paschal lamb, a usual attribute of St John the Baptist.

Santiago Dotor, 13 November 2002

Blazon: Gules a paschal lamb Argent holding a flag Argent a cross of the first laying on a book proper.

Željko Heimer, 13 November 2002

Similarly, the coat-of-arms of Puerto Rico —originally named Island of San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico— has the Paschal Lamb sitting over a red Book of Revelations (with seven seals instead of three). The question is, why is the Book of Revelations, [written by St John the Evangelist] associated with St John the Baptist?
