Presentation of Ulsan

The city marks (shown on the flag) represents the Dragon defending the Temple of Tae Hwa, the dragon of defence of the fatherland, the dragon called choYong who was a son of the dragon of king, the guardian deity of Ulsan and three dragons which have symbolized the East Sea.

Law (No. 5243) established Ulsan Metropolitan City on Dec. 31, 1996. The status of Ulsan Metropolitan City was effective July 15, 1997

Ulsan was originally known as Sam Han and renamed Ulsan in the 13th year of King TaeJong in 1413. Ulsan subcounty was raised to the status of a town on April 1st,1931; to Ulsan City on June 1st, 1962; merged into the city & country of Ulsan on Jan. 1st, 1995; and finally Ulsan to the a metropolitan city composed of four Districts & one County.
