The flag is said to have been in use during 1875-1879 Ryukyu Dynasty.

The blue, red and yellow whirl stands for beauty, humanity and tenderness which they believe are three goodness and white colour symbolizes pride of purity.

This is an historic flag in Okinawa.

I read an interesting book titled Ryukyu Kokki no Tomoe-Hata or Comma shaped crest flag as Ryuukyu national flag written by Kinjyo Tadahito 1981 in Okinawa which shows Ryuukyu Sho dynasty flag used 1895?-1897 a few times.

The flag has three Tomoes of red, yellow and blue from top clockwise in white field. The other depiction which supposedly was taken from The Flag Book of the United States by Whitney Smith is wrong and yellow and blue should be switched.
