City Background

Nakatsugawa was founded on 1 April 1951 by a merger of two villages, and became a city on 1 April 1952. It has grown significantly since then. The emblem features a stylised naka (centre, inside) in the centre, with two extra line making the emblem a circular shape. The design symbolises the expansion like a cirlce (in all directions?) of the city area by joingin with nearby villages, the peace of the union, and the resulting rushing increase of the city population.
