After the formation of the municipality, Sawara City made a public appeal for the design of an appropriate emblem. From the 769 entries received, the work of a Mr Utsuki/Utsugi/Uzuki of Oume City was chosen. The emblem consists of a stylised katakana sa サ of Sawara in the shape of a fish inside a circular shape. The sa communicates industry (sangyo) and the circle the ripples and fishing locations of the Tone River. The water and fish together express a flourishing future and the tourist city Sawara.
