Overview

Gonfalone of Buonconvento, Siena province, in Tuscany.
Dov Gutterman, 30 July 2002

The municipality has an area of 65 sq. km and 3,100 inhabitants. Coat of arms. Red with a crowned lion holding with the forepaw two silver keys crossed in saltire. [In fact, the lion holds only one key and the other one is placed over the first one.] The coat of arms was prescribed by Decree of the President of the Council, 15 March 1957. The keys recall St. Peter, to whom the main church of Bunonconvento is dedicated. The silver lion is said to recall the arms of Siena. An other theory relates this lion to the Germanic Emperor Henry VII of Luxembourg (1274-1313; Emperor, 1312-1313), who died in Buonconvento on 24 August 1313. The coat of arms in, current use by the municipality does not match the official description found in the Decree.
