There is a photo of the
gonfalone at <soalinux.comune.firenze.it>.
It is a page of the Fiorentina website but this is the gonfalon
of the city of Florence, dating from the end of the 11th century.

"The "Gonfalone" is a large flag which is kept
inside Palazzo Vecchio -- Florence's City Hall -- that came to
Philadelphia as part of a "ceremonial gift" on the
occasion of Splendor of Florence and the renewing of the Sister
City Pact between the two cities. When this flag travels -- only
on official visits -- it is accompanied by five men in
Renaissance costume (shown below) who also play instruments
dating back to the period. "

Those are flags of neighborhoods of Florence in the XIV
century. I didn't understand it perfecly, but these flags seem to
have had either military or sportive character.
