Introduction

Tverya is known in English as Tiberias, after the Roman emperor Tiberius Caesar, and nicknamed city of the Kinnereth is situated in the east shore of Kinnereth Sea (Sea of Galilee). Established about 2,000 years ago and got 40,000 inh. This town, with its antiques and resorts, is a municipality since 1948.

Dov Gutterman, 14 October 2001

Petit Larousse Illustré says that Tiberias (in French, Tibériade), was founded in year 18 AD, on the shore of the Lake of Genesareth, also called Lake of Tiberias or Sea of Galilee. After the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, Tiberias became an important center of the Jewish national and intellectual life. Modern Tiberias is located slightly north of the ancient city. Tiberius Julius Caesar was emperor from 14 to 37.

Ivan Sache, 15 October 2001

Ivan Sache suggested, I guess Genesareth is an approximate rendition of Kinnereth. Not so, Gennosar is a name of another ancient city on the lake shore not far from today Kibbutz Gennosar, north to Tiberias.

Description

Most flags are white (I also spotted green) with blue emblem and inscription below. The municipal emblem was published in the official gazette (Rashumot, Yalkut ha-Pirsumim), YP 631, 30 October 1958, in the first batch of emblems. Sources: author's own observation, 2 October 2001.
