Novalja is a city covering the northern part of the Pag
Island. The area is inhabited unteruptedly since ancient times.
Today it number somewhat above 3000 inhabitants. In 1992 it was
given the community status but was upgraded to a city in 1997.
The Coat of Arms is shown in the Tourist Guide
I mentioned several times previously (Croatia - Tourist Guide,
Leksikografski zavod Miroslav Krlea, Zagreb, 2000.) and
both flag and Coat of Arms are photographed and pictured on the
city web site at <www.novalja.hr>
21.07.2003. There is also cited in full the civic statutes from
2001: Statut Grada Novalje, 23.11.2001, upanijski glasnik
Licko-senjske upanije. In the statutes the Coat of Arms,
the flag and the ceremonial flag are described, though I am sure
that they must have been adopted before that date.
The coat of arms of Novalja is Azure Christs' monogramme or. The
form of the cross with initial P is of a form found from early
Christian remains in Novalja. P also stands for PAX (peace). The
flag is white with the coat of arms in the middle.
The Ceremonial Flag is suprisingly not white,
but dark blue with the coat of arms in the middle, name of the
city above, vine and olive branches below and tails in the fly
(the image is a reconstruction based on description and image of
Coat of Arms with branches at the mentioned site).
