Overview

Nuuk is the capital of Greenland. It is located on the West coast, in the territory of West Greenland (Kitaa). The official name of the municipality is "Nuuk Kommunea", and includes the villages of Kapisillit and Qeqertarsuatsiaat. The site where I found the banner is <www.nuuk.gl> and there I found a text written in Danish where is the description of the symbols.
Fabio Facoetti, 25 July 2003

Translated from this site: "The teachers' college is the Greenlandic place of higher education and probably the all-time most important cultural institution in the country. The building is from 1907 and is considered one of the most beautiful buioldings in Greenland.
Mount Sermitsiaq is the dominating mountain of Nuuk, lying about 15 kilometers north of the city on Sadeløen [Saddle Island might be named so because of the mountain]. Sermitsiaq is 1208 meters high.
The kayak paddle refers to the livelihood of the indigenous people, hunting sea creatures, but also reminds us that Greenland is ruled from Nuuk.
The three blue wavelines symbolise the sea and fjord near Nuuk and the three white wavelines symbolise the ice at sea."
Ole Andersen, 25 July 2003

Photo at <iserit.greennet.gl> show the flag as above: white flag charged with the municipal Coat of Arms.

I've made the Coat of Arms 2/3 of the height of the flag until we get official specs if ever we find them one day.

In the Coat of Arms is pictured the red seminar, a weathercock and yellow windows. Behind the building is the Sermitsiaq Mountain. Below the building are a yellow kayak paddle and three waves. Sermitsiaq (1.200 meters) is the symbol of Nuuk and is located some 15 kilometres north of the capital. The paddle symbolises the Greenlandic Peoples original way of living, the seal hunting, and the wave symbolises the see and the ice. The Coat of Arms is drawn by Ejner Heilmann and Sven Tito Achen. In 1986, it was trademarked.
