Overview

Nanortalik municipality is the southest town of Greenland, and it is included in the territory of West Greenland ("Kitaa"); its official name is "Nanortalik Kommunea". Its blazon consists of three polar bears in a red field. I found it at <www.nanortalik.gl>, where you can find information about the town.

Please note that Nanortalik has the only municipal arms with a red field, because a blue field like the other municipalities would be too close to the Greenlandic arms. Nanok means polar bear in Greenlandic, and Nanortalik means 'the bear place'.
Ole Andersen, 26 July 2003

Photos at <www.nanortalik.gl> show only coat of arms but no flag. Therefore, this reported flag probably don't exist (yet?).

I recently researched municipal flags in Greenland by correspondence with municipal authorities in Greenland. The results have just been published in the Fall 2005 issue of Nordisk Flaggkontakt, the journal of the Nordic Flag Society [joe05].
I managed to get confirmation from 15 of 18 municipalities all using the same flag model - the coat of arms on a white field (the colour white carries no symbolism). Nanortalik is one of them.

Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms, according to Aachen's 1982 book [ach82], as quoted in <www.ngw.nl>, is (my blazon) gules, three polar bears proper passant bramant sent in pale. The shape of the shield is ogival in [ach82] and rounded in the municipal website.
