Flag redrawn after the Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia. Clan Agnew is a family that has flourished in Scotland's Wigtownshire and Galloway since the 1300's. The only flag listed for the clan is the standard, which is described as "Azure, a St. Andrew's cross Argent in the hoist and of two tracts Argent and Gules, upon which is depicted the Badge three times along with the Motto 'Consilio non impetu' in letters Or upon two transverse bands Sable." The motto, "Consilio non impetu," is translated as "By wisdom not by force," and the badge is described as "An eagle issuant and reguardant Proper." The eagle from the badge and from the crest of the arms is believed to echo a similar device which was on the shield of the
descendants of Somerled, a twelfth-century King of the Isles, from whom the Agnews are believed to have descended.
