Every French warship receives when being commissioned a square silk flag, which usually bears the name of the ship, her coat of arms when applicable, or a design recalling her name. The pennant is fixed on the bayonet of a rifle in the middle of the Guard of Honour and displayed whenever the Guard of Honour is summoned (e.g., ceremonies, official visits,..). The rest of the time, the flag is carefully placed in a glass closet in the Captain's desk.
