The law of 1893 granting a premium of 1.70 FRF per gross register ton and 1000 miles shipped boosted the building and exploitation of sailing ships (voiliers) in France. Accordingly, 200 2,000 to 3,000 ton ships (three and four-masters) were built within five years. Companies named Voiliers Nantais, Voiliers Marseillais, Voiliers Havrais..., were created.
In Dunkirk, Société des Voiliers Dunkerquois, founded in 1900, operated six ships named after local seamen, Van Strabel, Jean Bart, Jacobsen, L'Hermite, Cornil Bart and Faulconnier.
Thereafter, it purchased three other sailing ships from other companies, Brizeux, Alice Marie and Bérengère. These ships transported oil in cases (it was before the creation of the specialized tankers), nickel from New Caledonia and coal to Chile. The company sold its ships in 1924 and disappeared.
