In 1857, Captain Claude Mourou founded the Compagnie de Navigation à Vapeur Claude Mourou and launched a line between Marseilles and the Algerian ports of Philippeville (Skikda) and Bone (Annaba). The line was extended in 1865 to Tunis, vai Cagliari (Sardinia).
Mourou owned five steam liners. Three of them were lost: SS Prophète ran aground Cap Lardier, near Toulon, in 1860; SS Gironde sunk between Marseilles and Almeria in 1867; and SS Province-d'Alger ran aground the islands of Hyères in 1869. The last ship owned by Mourou, SS Sophie was sold in 1873 and the company was sold off the same year.

The house flag of the Compagnie Mourou was vertically divided blue-white-red, the white stripe being broader because of two triangles added on each side, and MC (black) in the middle of the white stripe.
