The Denis Frères company was founded by Etienne Denis, a deep-sea captain from Bordeaux. After having sailed the seven seas, Denis bought the 227-ton clipper La Mouette, built to sail to the Far East in June 1862.
In November, the Etablissements Denis Frères was formed in Saigon by his
sons. They created a subsidiary called Compagnie Côtière de
l'Annam.
At the end of French Indochina (1955), the company was repatriated to France. It was bought by Delmas-Vieljeux in the 1980s.
The Lamartine, a cargo and passenger liner, was built in Haarlem in 1953 for the Compagnie Côtière de l'Annam under the name of Ville de Saïgon. Repatriated to France in 1955 by Denis Frères and renamed, it was exploited by the Messageries Maritimes. It became the Chilean Osorro for Empresa Maritima de l'Estado and was destroyed in 1970.
