Presentation of the municipality

Garches is a city of 18,036 inhabitants (1999 census) located 5 km west of Paris. The area of the municipality is 269 ha.

The first mention of the place dates back to 1063 as Garziacus. Two possible etymologies are:

  • Garz, a small coppice, itself coming from Germanic Harz;
  • Quercus, an oak (Latin), a tree rather common in the woods of the west of Paris, which may explain the oak leaf shown on the municipal coat of arms.

Garches is mostly known for the Raymond Poincaré Hospital, which is specialized in medical treatment of road accident victims.
