Morzine is a municipality of ca. 3,000 inhabitants (permanent
population).
The village of Morzine was established on the confluency of six
torrents, whose confluency constitutes the river Dranse. Located in
the Chablais massif in the French Prealps, Morzine remained a
relatively isolated mountain village, whose main activities were
mountain pasturage and slate extraction.
In the 1930s, the hotel-keeper Francois Baud tranformed the village
into a summer and winter mountain resort. Morzine became rapidly the
main center of tourism in the Upper-Chablais.
In 1960, Morzine gained world fame when the Morzinois skier Jean
Vuarnet won the downhill in the Olympics of Squaw Valley. Vuarnet was
one of the first skiers to use metal skis and invented the legendary
"egg-position". Jean Vuarnet was later one of the founders of the
controversial ski resort of Avoriaz, located on the territory of
Morzine, which extended the ski area of Morzine up to 2,500 m a.s.l.
Morzine is also the arrival of a classical stage of
Tour de France (via the Col de Joux-Plane).

The municipal flag, a banner of the municipal arms, is vertically divided red-yellow. It can be seen in various places of the village.
