The department is named after the Pyrénées mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.
It was formerly named Basses-Pyrénées (Lower-Pyrénées), and was renamed Pyrénées-Atlantiqus (Atlantic-Pyrénées) because Basses was regarded as derogatory by the inhabitants of the department.
