Presentation of the city

Le Vivier-sur-Mer is located on the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.
In 1954, mussel breeding was initiated in the Bay. Mussels are reared on bouchots, i.e. stakes of oak wood of c. 5 m high half-sticked in the sand. The mussel spat comes from the Atlantic Ocean. Mussel breeders use specific boats with wheels, which allow them to reach the bouchots at any time. Mussel harvesting starts the last week-end of July with the Mussel Day, during which 4 tons of mussels are eaten.

The mussel production in the area reaches 10,000 tons per year, c. 1/5th of the French production. About 65 companies, hiring 300 employees, are involved in the mussel production.
Le Vivier-sur-Mer has created jointly with the neighbouring municipality of Cherrueix a mussel-breeding port.
