The city was built on the estuary of river Goyen (Breton, Gwaien), which probably gave its name to the city.
Audierne is a small sea resort and an important fishing port (Audierne is the capital city of the AU quartier, all French boats having to bear a two-letter code showing where they are registered). The main specialities of Audierne fishers are lobster, rock lobster, and spider crab.

The flag of Audierne is white with the municipal coat of arms placed in the middle of the flag and surmonted by the name of the municipality written in black Capital letters.
The coat of arms of Audierne highlights the main activity of the city, fishing. The two red animals are most probably lobsters, which are among the most prized Crustaceans. The chief of the blazon has a semy of ermine spots representing Brittany.
