Description

The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is the oldest university of Madrid, originally located at Alcalá de Henares and named after it — the Latin name for that city being Complutum. Its coat-of-arms is based on that of Cardinal Cisneros, who founded the University in 1499. Its history dates back however to 1293, when king Sancho IV of Castile created the Estudio de Escuelas Generales de Alcalá. From 1836 to 1970 it was called Universidad Central.

Its flag, flown from most university buildings and halls of residence, is crimson —same shade as the flag of Madrid city— with the coat-of-arms occupying about half the height. The coat-of-arms in my image is based on the JPG available at the UCM website.

Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros was a Spanish cardinal, born Torrelaguna, Castile, 1436, died Roa, 1517. Franciscan confessor of queen Isabel (1492), archbishop of Toledo (1495), administrador of Castile when the queen passed away (1504), great inquisitor of Castile (1507-1516), and promoter of the multilingual Bible. Source: Petit Larousse. The second most important city in former Spanish Sahara was called Villa Cisneros.

The UCM website also shows an animated GIF [broken link] with a banner-like flag. I do not know what it it is. Since the GIF is linked to the webpage about the university's governing body, it may be some kind of institutional flag for ceremonies.
