Introduction

The flag and coat-of-arms were adopted 16th February 1994, according to this webpage. This town is where Antonio de Nebrija prepared the first Spanish Grammar, published in Salamanca in 1492. It appears in Calderón de la Barca's The Mayor of Zalamea, and is one of the most probable birthplaces of Pedro de Valdivia, the 16th century conqueror of Chile. More on the history of Zalamea in this webpage. The bordure of the coat-of-arms shows the letters "n" for Nebrija and "c" for Calderón, in the way they appeared on their signatures.
