Introduction

In 1977 the struggle for autonomy and the discussion about symbols started again. The conservatives preferred designs with a [red] cross, and several were published by the newspaper Heraldo de Aragón. A banner-of-arms based on the arms of Sobrarbe was proposed by a well-known (not Aragonese) historian.

The left-wing parties supported variations of the Catalan flag, for example the proposals of the Aragon Socialist Party and of the Aragon Democratic Party. Andalan, a left-wing magazine, organized a contest with five finalists.
