In former times German soccer players carried green and white trousers, official colors of DFB. And always lost. They changed to white shirts and black trousers. They became soccer world champions. Source: DFB website.

My 10-year old daughter guessed that it was because green and white are the colors of a soccer field which makes excellent sense as well.
