Description

Blue-white with the arms. Sources: flag from Ulle 1999, arms from the Thuringia official website.

Stefan Schwoon, 14 March 2001

Flag adopted 26.10.1994, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms were granted on October 26, 1994. The lion is the lion of the Counts (later Princes) of Schwarzburg, who, in the Middle Ages, ruled most of the present district. The small shield shows the arms of the Counts of Mansfeld, who, in the 18th century, acquired several estates in the district. The base of the shield symbolises the mountainous terrain, with many forests, and the Wipper river.

Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996.
