Description

Wolfen has 40,000 inhabitants and is part of Bitterfeld county. The flag is black-yellow with the arms in the centre. The colours of the stripes are not derived from the arms, but are a reference to Saxony-Anhalt. The charges in the arms stand for the industries located in the town:

  1. a flask for the chemical industry,
  2. wheat for the rural industry,
  3. part of a film roll and
  4. mining tools.
Source: Günther 1996b.

Since Wolfen's flag is black-yellow and Saxony-Anhalt's is yellow-black, I wonder if the actual reference is to the (former, Prussian) province of Saxony.

Santiago Dotor, 13 June 2002

My comments were a paraphrase of the descriptions in Günther 1996b, which says the flag of Wolfen was adopted in 1990. Today's black-yellow flag of Saxony-Anhalt was adopted in 1991. Therefore I think that the flag of Wolfen was based on the 1946-1952 black-yellow flag which was changed to yellow-black in 1991.

The Hauptsatzung of Wolfen, which contains the prescription of the coat-of-arms and the flag, can be found online at the city website:
