Description

Coat-of-arms and flag officially adopted 25th June 1986, when the district was established in East Berlin, but a flag was not adopted. Since 1990 the above flag was used unofficially, with no official approval. The local parliament adopted a new coat-of-arms on 11th July 1995, which was used in the proposal for a new flag. However, neither the coat-of-arms nor the flag were approved by Berlin's Department of the Interior (Senatsinnenverwaltung von Berlin), and the proposal was rejected in December 1995. Then Hellersdorf started flying again the old unofficial flag with the 1986 arms, and kept doing so until 31st December 2000. The districts of Marzahn and Hellersdorf merged on 1st January 2001 into the new district Marzahn-Hellersdorf.
