Number of inhabitants by 31.12. 2000: 26844. The first trace of the
town dated back to 1313. Thanks to position on trade paths, the town was
always an important business centre. The town flourished most under the
family of Žerotín. The prosperity was connected with development of drapery.
At the beginning of the 19th century textile industry, millinery, tobacco
industry and machine engineering developed much. The town centre was declared
Municipal Sight Area.
