A new Canadian Inuit territory of Nunatsiavut will be established within the boundaries of Newfoundland and Labrador sometime next year. Agreement on the framework of this agreement was announced on Friday.
The Legislative capital is Hopedale, administrative capital is Nain.
I was told by the public affairs person at the Labrador Inuit Association that
the colors of the flag deliberately echo that of the Labrador flag.
Dave Fowler, 2 September 2003
This a First Nations territory - not at the same level as
Nunavut, the Northwest Territories,
or Yukon. It is in Newfoundland and Labrador, and echoes
the development of a similar First Nations people who establish a territory in northwestern
British Columbia last year.
Rob Raeside, 2 September 2003
According to the settlement agreement, the settlement applies to Labrador. There
is also a Nunatsiavut claim in Quebec which is not part
of this agreement.
