City flag

The three flames on the sail are taken from the arms of Montreal's founder, Maisonneuve, and the ship itself recalls the founder's ship. The polar bear is emblematic of the city's name (North). The crown symbolizes the city, while the maple leaves represent Canada. The motto reads "Civium Vires, Civitatis Vis" and means 'The strength of a country resides in the valor of its citizens.' I saw this flag in Montréal-Nord in 1998-1999. Beaudoin reports a version with different inscriptions: CITÉ DE MONTRÉAL NORD above the arms and MONTRÉAL NORTH CITY under the arms, both in a semi-circle with black lettering.
