About the Flag of Londrina

At the official city website you can find an image and description of the flag of the Brazilian municipality of Londrina:

The cherry red represents the colour of the earth and its fertility and symbolizes enthusiasm, courage and fighting spirit. Arranged in a cross, the silver stars recall the Southern Cross and the four continents where the pioneers came from, and represent the inspiration, the road and the path. Being equally spaced, the stars represent also expansion in all directions, open arms to the four cardinal points [of the compass], and balance.
Mark Sensen, 6 February 1998, translated by Jorge Candeias

Londrina is the second city of the state of Paraná, after its capital, Curitiba, located in the nortwest of the state, not far from the border with the state of São Paulo. I don't have hard evidence, but I strongly believe that the name of this city derives from London ("Londres" in Portuguese), which suggests the presence of English colonists there. This English connection could explain partially the overall design (a cross of stars) and colors (silver and gules) of the flag, despite what's said (or not said) in the above referred website.
Jorge Candeias, 28 June 1999

About Londrina

Jorge Candeias is correct that there is an English association with Londrina. The city was developed by a British company starting in 1930.
Joseph McMillan, 4 July 2001

Londrina means "Little London" because of the English colonists and also because of the fog. Those colonists used to say that Londrina's fog was just like London's fog.
