About the Flag of Andirá

The flag was instituted by municipal law no. 354, of 11 December 1968. It was designed by Arcinoé Antônio Peixoto de Faria and is divided per saltire into alternating red and green sectors, the green in the hoist and fly quarters and the red in the upper and lower. The quarters are formed by yellow stripes bordered in white crossing each other diagonally, with a white rectangle bearing the municipal coat of arms on the center. The flag follows the proportions of the national flag (i.e., 7:10). The coat of arms was adopted by the same law and is also a product of Arcinoé Antônio Peixoto de Faria. The shield shows a fruited ingazeiro plant proper on a white field, alluding to the city's original name, Ingá. This name was given when the settlement was founded because of the large quantity of this fruit in the region. The name later had to be changed to Andirá, because another city of the same name already existed in the State of Paraíba. The white field is surrounded by a red and gold brickwork bordure, recalling one of the natural resources of the region, clay that is extracted for the fabrication of bricks and tiles. The external ornaments, a branch of coffee and a stalk of maize (corn), are the main agricultural products of the municipality.
