Pre 1941 state flag

[1897 Argentine war flag]
by Thanh-Tâm Lê and António Martins, 07 Apr 2000

1913: In the state ensign the sun is only as tall as the white stripe, and it is closer to the hoist.
1941: Same as today.
Nathan Augustine, 05 Dec 1995

Does this mean that once the sun was not «only as tall as the white stripe», i.e., it was wider? Because the current flag has the sun definitely slightly smaller than the white stripe...
António Martins, 14 May 1999

In Meyers Konversations-Lexikon [mkl97], there is a plate with flags of the states, and accompanying it a list with descriptions of flags (in German): «Republic of Argentina: Blue-white-blue horizontal. The white has a golden sun in first third of the white stripe.»
Željko Heimer, 16 Sep 1996

On an 1864 flag chart, Argentina however is shown with a (very) offset "sun of May".
Santiago Dotor, 29 Dec 1999

The argentine state ensign had an off set sun in 1913-1941. Both references are older (1897 and 1864), but perhaps this flag goes back several years as a variant or with other meaning (merchant ensign?).
António Martins, 31 Dec 1999
